Shigella Bacteria Is The New American Threat - Know What It Is

The alarming increase in shigella bacteria cases across the nation prompted a warning from the US national public health organisation on Friday. According to BBC, the Center for Disease and Control Prevention (CDC) warned in a statement that the spread of a drug-resistant disease is impacting thousands of Americans rapidly.

Fever, diarrhoea, and stomach pain are symptoms of the shigella bacteria. Health officials reported a spike in cases associated with the drug-resistant stomach bug starting in 2015.

Shigella Virus

Officials have referred to the virus as a "serious public health threat" due to the fact that it is difficult to cure with medication. According to the analysis, while no infections were connected to the shigella XDR strain in 2015, 5% of infections in 2022 were. The strain, which is resistant to the five antibiotics that are most frequently used to treat it, was implicated in 1% of all infection cases in the US in 2019.

Individuals with compromised immune systems and poor health are more likely to become ill for a longer time after contracting the bacteria.

Shigella is found in the stool of a sick person, which is how it is diagnosed. Shigella cases have been controlled by drinking enough water and getting enough rest. Often washing your hands is another approach to protect yourself.
