In Himachal Pradesh, India, approximately 732 people have been found to have the bacterial infection scrub typhus. So far this year, this illness has been linked to a total of five fatalities.
What is Scrub typhus?
Orientia tsutsugamushi is the disease-causing mite that causes scrub typhus. It spreads through the bites of infected parasitic mites, which feed on rats, mice, and other rodents living in rural and suburban areas. The symptoms of the disease include fever, cough, headaches, chills, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and, in some cases, a rash.
How do you prevent the spread of infection?
♦ Make sure that you maintain adequate personal hygiene and guard against lice that might be carrying the disease.
♦ Beware of the mice, rats, and rodents in your area.
♦ Avoid travelling to regions where there is an existing contact with the typhus infection.
♦ If you have any pets, make sure that you look after their hygiene as well.
