A record-breaking heatwave has gripped several Indian states, and the weather service predicts a challenging summer across much of the nation. On April 17, the India Meteorological Department issued a heatwave warning for several Indian states, including Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, etc. 13 persons passed away at a government event in Maharashtra the day before after spending many hours outside.
As the most recent incident demonstrates, high heat can result in heat stroke, a serious emergency that can be fatal.
How to avoid heatstroke
- Sip cold beverages frequently, especially when working out. (But not directly under the sun, let your body come under natural temperature)
- Take cold baths or showers.
- Avoid the sun between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
- dress in light-colored, loose clothing;
- Apply Sunscreen
- consume moderate amounts of alcohol and Caffeine; and
- refrain from strenuous activities, especially under the sun
But if you experience it knows that heat stroke is a medical emergency, so the victim needs to be sent right away to the hospital.
- Move them to a cool area or air-conditioned room,
- Get them to lie down and raise their feet slightly,
- If the person is conscious get them to drink plenty of water,
- Cool their skin with cool water, and fan them. Cold packs around the neck or armpits are often helpful.
