Ozempe-demic: Is Ozempic killing the Body Positivity movement?

The Y2K fashion heroine chick and skinny-ism from the 2000s are back in the trends once again, posing direct challenges to the body-positive movement that the millennials fought so hard to champion.

But what is Ozempic?

Ozempic, a type of semaglutide manufactured by the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, has emerged as a blockbuster diabetes and new favourite obesity drug. Ozempic has dramatically transformed the field of diabetes treatment, mainly Type-2 diabetes treatment, which constitutes 90% of the diabetes population.

Furthermore, in 2021, the FDA gave the green flag and approved the medication to be effectively used for obesity. Since then ozempic became the most sought-after choice to be treated as a competent anti-obesity medication for long-term weight management in adults.

Ozempic vs. Body Positivity

What is more baffling, a trend of skinny-ism among celebrities has sparked rumourous about them using ozempic to lose fat. Those who previously endorsed the body positivity movement started making highlights, owing to their tremendous weight loss in short amount of time. The most noticeable weight loss transformation journey which created buzz on the internet is of the British singer Adele.

What further pushed the popularity of the ozempic to become more widespread was its use by top celebrities. The celebrities whose Initial brands were to advocate for non-standard bodies and inclusivity; from Oprah to Lizzo, Mindy Kelly, Rebel Wilson, and many more. They were the faces of the body positivity movement in the media directly or indirectly endorsing the movement.

The breakpoint in Ozempic usage came in 2022 when the trendsetter Kardashian sisters began to remove their implants and seemed to be much skinnier. Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, and Khloe Kardashian, who were previously popular, established the trend of the BBL shape voluptuous hourglass body.

Wegovy is an injectable variant of the Ozempic medication used primarily for weight loss. It includes a greater concentration of Ozempic.

Back in 2023, after the viral TikTok videos demonstrating the use of Ozempic as an anti-obesity resulted in fast weight loss, it went so viral and widespread that there was a nationwide mass shortage of the drug.

As a cause-effect, the manufacturing Danish company became the most valuable corporate asset in the European Union, raising the company value equally as the price of medication soared.

What makes Ozempic the most appealing weight reduction choice for most individuals is the effectiveness and speed with which benefits may be observed after only a week or so of treatment.

A viable alternative for those who struggle with weight loss because of a genetic predisposition, despite years of intense exercise, personal training, and dietary adjustments.

But the question remains, is it the beginning of another unhealthy beauty standard? Or a step towards a healthier lifestyle.

Bollywood is no exception to the Ozempic effects; filmmaker Karan Johar's recent Instagram story created highlights, in which he appeared extremely thin, which he claimed to be the result of "eating well and staying healthy," and influencers such as Kusha Kapila have been suspected of using the magical pill.

These have sparked a broader discussion between weight loss and ethical practices.
