A video that surfaced on social media brought to light a new outdoor gym that employs different Indian mythological characters as part of the gym equipment. This adds a new thrill to the habit of working out.
An outdoor gym is a gym that is built outside in a public park. The benefits of an outdoor gym are that it is free, accessible to people of all age groups, starting from children to senior citizens, and it does not even feel like a big task to visit it.
This idea is similar to the 1960s–1970s proliferation of fitness trails, which continue to be created, particularly in the US and Europe.
In some instances, trails that are used for fitness are referred to as outdoor gyms. There are different types of outdoor gym equipment that vary according to the nature of parks, the locality, and the visitors.
These machines can also be categorized into strength training and simple fitness or resistance training. Some basic outdoor exercising installations used commonly all over the world are pull-up bars, balancing beams, and parallel dip bars, to name a few.
Outdoor gyms have gained a lot of traction in New Delhi, where traditional gyms have had low popularity. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) installed 40 sets around the area in 2012, and other municipalities quickly followed suit.
In the gym, on one side, a statue of Lankapati Ravana has been made and set in such a way that when someone is using it to exercise, its tongue is coming out.
In another section, there is such a machine in the form of Garuda, which flies like a bird.
To add to that, ten heads of Lankapati Ravana have also been incorporated in one machine. When the machine is being used, its head is moving rapidly.
This interactive style of working out would be very effective in urging more and more people to start getting active and follow a fitness routine on a weekly basis. Especially for children and older people, this kind of a gym has been a great hit.
