Mandatory testing of cough syrup samples before exporting from June 1: Govt

The government of India announced in a notice on Tuesday that it will no longer permit the export of cough syrups unless samples have been examined at a government laboratory. Following the discovery of tainted cough syrups made in India and their connection to the deaths of numerous children in the Gambia and Uzbekistan, this order was issued.

According to an announcement made on Monday by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and distributed by the health ministry on Tuesday, exporters would have to start having their cough syrups tested on June 1.

The trade ministry's notification, which listed the labs that would offer the certificate, noted that cough syrup could only be exported after the export sample had been examined and a certificate of analysis had been produced.

The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission in Ghaziabad, the CDL in Kolkata, the CDTL in Chennai, the CDTL in Mumbai, the CDTL in Hyderabad, the RDTL in Chandigarh, the RDTL in Guwahati, and any state drug testing labs with NABL accreditation would all issue the CoA.

After hearing earlier in the month that government laboratories should test cough syrups before exporting them, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) made this choice. Prior to sending out the notification, the health ministry took up the suggestion for discussion.

As a result of cough syrups made by two companies with operations around New Delhi, at least 70 children in the Gambia and 19 in Uzbekistan died in the past year. Manufacturers Marion Biotech and Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd. exported cough syrups that contained deadly toxins. Both businesses are the subject of an investigation after the allegations against them were disproved.

Recently, in April, the World Health Organisation (WHO) alerted the public about contaminated cough syrups produced by Punjab-based QP Pharmachem Ltd. and discovered in the Marshall Islands and Micronesia. Trillium Pharma, based in Hyderabad, was in charge of marketing the cough syrups.
