In response to the recent COVID-19 scare in Kerala, the Karnataka government has made wearing masks mandatory in public places for individuals above the age of 60, those with comorbidities such as heart and kidney disease, and those displaying symptoms of cold and cough. This precautionary measure aims to combat the spread of the infection and protect vulnerable populations.
Increased surveillance and testing
The Union Government has also instructed state governments to increase surveillance of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) cases. This includes increasing testing and sending samples for genome sequencing. Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dinesh Gundu Rao, has emphasised the need for escalated testing to determine the rate of infection in the community. Testing is crucial in confirming the spread of the virus and allowing for appropriate measures to be taken.
No Restrictions on Movement or Gatherings
Despite the increase in cases, Minister Gundu Rao has stated that there is currently no need to impose restrictions on movement or gatherings. He reassured the public that the situation is not serious and does not warrant strict measures at this time. However, he emphasised the importance of wearing masks for high-risk groups and urged health authorities to remain vigilant.
Enhanced surveillance in border districts
The State COVID-19 Technical Advisory Committee has recommended enhanced surveillance measures in border districts such as Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, and Chamarajanagar, which share borders with Kerala. These districts will be closely monitored to prevent the spread of the virus across state lines. The government will determine additional actions based on the situation in these areas.
No Restrictions on Ayyappa Pilgrims
When asked about restrictions on Ayyappa pilgrims returning from Kerala, Minister Gundu Rao stated that there are currently no restrictions on movement or gatherings. However, the Union Government's letter to the states emphasised the need for public health measures and respiratory hygiene during the upcoming festive season.
The Karnataka government is taking proactive steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by making masks mandatory for high-risk groups and increasing surveillance and testing.
