India has launched the world's first made-in-India intranasal Covid-19 vaccine, iNCOVACC, manufactured by Bharat Biotech. The vaccine was launched on Thursday by the Union health minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, and is intended for low- and middle-income countries. It is priced at ₹800 for private markets and ₹325 for supplies to the central and state governments.
The vaccine has been evaluated in phase 1, 2, and 3 clinical trials involving over 3,000 participants, with positive results. India has also begun giving boosters to healthcare and frontline workers, and those above 60 years with comorbidities. However, the pace of booster doses administrated has been slow.
