Cholera outbreak claims 10 lives in South Africa's

A total of 19 new cases of cholera, including 10 dead cases, were recorded in Hammanskraal on Sunday by the provincial health department of Gauteng, South Africa. It was revealed that South Africa had experienced its first cholera death after the disease arrived from Malawi in February.

As of Sunday, there were no recorded numbers of cholera cases statewide, but Gauteng, the area with the biggest population and where Johannesburg and Pretoria are situated, has been particularly badly affected.

Infected food or drink is the main way that cholera is transferred, and it can result in severe diarrhoea, vomiting, and weakness. It can kill in just a few hours if left untreated.

The most recent outbreak in South Africa was in 2008–2009. Around 12,000 cases were reported as a result of an outbreak in Zimbabwe, a neighbouring nation, which generated a surge of imported cases and local transmission in turn.
