Bird flu virus kills 11-year-old girl in Cambodia, first case since 2014

The government of Cambodia reports that an 11-year-old girl has passed away from an avian influenza strain, also known as bird flu.

According to a statement released on Thursday by the health minister, Mam Bunheng, it was the first known human infection with the H5N1 strain in the nation since 2014.

Bird flu, also known as avian influenza, is a viral infection that primarily affects birds. In rare cases, the virus can spread to humans, typically through close contact with infected birds or their droppings. In humans, bird flu can cause severe respiratory illness, and in some cases, it can be fatal.

While human cases of bird flu are relatively rare, they are closely monitored by public health authorities due to the potential for the virus to mutate and spread more easily etween humans. Outbreaks of bird flu in poultry can also have significant economic consequences, as infected birds may need to be culled to prevent the spread of the virus.

Prevention and control of bird flu typically involve measures such as surveillance for outbreaks, vaccination of poultry, and public education about safe handling of birds and their products.
