18-Month-Old Girl's Organs saved two lives At Delhi's AIIMS

The family of an 18-month-old girl whose brain death was confirmed at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi has donated her organs, giving two patients a second chance at life.

Mahira, a Mewat, Haryana, resident, fell from her balcony on November 6. She was taken to the AIIMS Trauma Center unconscious and with clear signs of severe brain injury.

According to Dr Deepak Gupta, a professor of neurosurgery at AIIMS, "She was certified brain dead on November 11 morning." He said that both of her kidneys were successfully transplanted into a 17-year-old teenager at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, while her liver had been successfully transplanted into a six-month-old infant at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) (AIIMS).

Organ Donation AIIMS

Her heart valves and corneas have been stored for future use, according to Gupta. Mahira is the second-youngest kid in Delhi/NCR whose organs were donated by the family, behind master Rishant (16 months).

Mahira is the third youngster at the AIIMS trauma centre to donate organs in the previous six months. “Rolly was the first child followed by 16-month-old Rishant whose organs were donated by his family in August. During counselling, Mahira’s parents were told about Rolly’s story after which they understood the concept of brain death and the need for organ donation to save the lives of others. They then agreed to donate her organs,” Dr Gupta said.

Dr Gupta also emphasised the need to educate parents about the dangers of children falling from heights."The leading cause of death among children in India is falling from height. Unusual trend found in our kids.”
