In the last 24 hours, a minimum of 10 heart attack deaths have been reported at garba festivals in Gujarat, with the youngest victim being just 17 years old.
The government has also issued an alert and advised the organisers of such gatherings to take all necessary measures, including ensuring that ambulances are available to transport people to hospitals if they feel ill. Over 500 ambulance calls were made in 24 hours.
One such tragic incident occurred when Veer Shah, a 17-year-old playing the garba at an event, suddenly felt ill and his nose began bleeding in the Kapadvanj town in the Kheda region. He was taken to a hospital immediately.
By the time his parents, who were attending another celebration, arrived at the hospital, he had already been pronounced dead, with a heart attack cited as the cause of death.
With folded hands, Ripal Shah motioned to the other people, "Please stay aware. Don't play Garba for long stretches of time without taking a break. I have lost my son today, I hope the same does not happen to anybody else."
When the crowd at the celebration where Veer was performing the garba learned of his passing, they conducted a two-minute silence in his memory. The event's organisers made the decision to cancel it for the next day, and many other organisers in Kapadvanj consented.
In Ahmedabad, Navsari, and Rajkot, there have been reports of similar incidents, including the deaths of people in their 20s.
