Zika, a new virus in mosquitos puts Karnataka on high alert

The Zika virus has been detected in Karnataka for the first time, raising concerns among the public and health officials. A mosquito sample collected from Chikkaballapur district tested positive for the virus in August 2023.

The Karnataka health department has taken a number of steps to control the spread of the Zika virus, including:

  • Conducting active surveillance for mosquitoes and humans.
  • Increasing awareness about the virus among the public.
  • Fogging and spraying affected areas to kill mosquitoes.
  • Advising pregnant women to take precautions against mosquito bites.

The public is advised to take the following precautions to protect themselves from the Zika virus:

  • Use mosquito repellent when going outdoors.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants when possible.
  • Use mosquito nets over beds and windows.
  • Empty standing water around homes and businesses, where mosquitoes breed.
