India has always been a top country when it comes to art, craft, and culture. Every time we Indians try to implement our art into our culture. One such output of this art and culture is Saree. Amongst many other things in our country, Saree is one thing because of which the world recognises India prominently. Over the decades, there have been many changes that have come into Sarees with respect to fabric, designs, prints, stitches, embroideries and the style of draping. And no doubt, Indian women are taking this Saree, a pride element for the country, ahead with power, brilliance and beauty.
The British Women in Sarees is a non-profit organisation which works towards promoting Indian handwork, artistry and culture. This group of women focus on showcasing the variety of Indian handloom saree to the world. They try to reach out to different artisans and weavers who make wonderful Sarees and support them to continue their work so that they can preserve Indian handcraft.
On 6th of August, this group has organised an event in London where 500 women of Indian origin will walk peacefully in Sarees from Trafalgar to Parliament. This event, Saree Walkathon, will start at 12 noon tomorrow. Dr Depti Jain, a person behind the idea of this Saree Walkathon. She has put all the efforts into making this happen. Her thought behind this is that 7th August is celebrated as National Handloom Day. The handlooms were an integral part of the Swadeshi movement in the Indian freedom struggle. So that through this peaceful Saree Walkathon we can give a tribute to the journey of our freedom movement and a stage to Indian art.
Tomorrow, cameras will be on these women. The world will be watching these proud women in beautiful Sarees and will see the power of Indian handwoven fabric.
