PERFORMANCES

The ceremony was a vibrant showcase of current Broadway productions, featuring performances from "Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club," "Hell's Kitchen," "Illinoise," "Merrily We Roll Along," "Stereophonic," "Suffs," "The Outsiders," "The Who's Tommy," and "Water for Elephants." Eddie Redmayne led an intense and eerie rendition of "Willkommen" from the "Cabaret" revival, captivating the audience with a chilling performance.

The night also saw rock legend Pete Townshend playing guitar for a number from "The Who's Tommy," blending classic rock with musical theater. Meanwhile, "The Outsiders" presented a chaotic and dynamic scene featuring falling water, buckets of dirt, and an onstage truck, embodying the gritty energy of the production.

The Highlight of the evening was when the theatre world came together to celebrate the extraordinary legacy of Chita Rivera in a heartfelt tribute at the Tony Awards. Three-time Tony honoree Rivera, who passed away in January at the age of 91, was commemorated with an emotional homage led by Broadway stars Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and Bebe Neuwirth. The evening was a poignant reminder of Rivera's indelible impact on the stage, with images from her iconic roles in "Chicago," "Kiss of the Spider Woman," and "West Side Story" projected as dancers brought her memorable numbers to life.

Host Ariana DeBose, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Anita in the recent "West Side Story" film, joined the tribute, adding a touch of modernity to the celebration of Rivera's timeless talent. "The air shimmered when she went on stage," Neuwirth remarked, encapsulating the magic Rivera brought to her performances. McDonald described Rivera as one of Broadway's "quintessential" voices.
