Apurva, a movie available on Disney+ Hotstar, aims to make a feminist statement while showcasing the power of a brave woman when faced with ruthless men. The film opens with a gang attacking and robbing three men on a highway in Chambal. They then encounter Apurva, who is travelling to surprise her boyfriend in Agra. The majority of the movie focuses on her terrifying ordeal after Sukhi, one of the gang members, kidnaps her.
The movie includes flashbacks of Apurva's life and her engagement with Sid, which are meant to develop their characters and love story. However, the emotional connection between the audience and the characters falls short, affecting the impact of the film. The cat-and-mouse chase between Apurva and her captors takes place in a deserted village, adding to the tense atmosphere. While there are gripping moments, the storyline is mostly predictable.
The four gangsters in the film are meant to be distinct in terms of age, personality, and background. However, the script fails to develop these characters, resulting in cardboard-like portrayals. The film touches on the issue of men recording incidents of sexual abuse on their phones but falls short of making a strong comment on social conditioning or misogyny.
Tara Sutaria carries the film as the protagonist, but her performance falls short in intense emotional scenes. The film is comparable to NH10 in terms of subject and storytelling but lacks the layers and nuances that made NH10 thought-provoking. Overall, Apurva is shocking at times but fails to leave a lasting impact.
