Strict Endorsement Guideline

To prevent deceptive advertisements and safeguard consumers' interests, the government has issued new guidelines for social media influencers. Friday, the government mandated that all social media influencers endorse any product, service, or scheme and disclose all "material" interests, including hotel accommodations, equity, discounts, and awards. Failure to do so will result in substantial fines.

In the past, the government has issued the following guidelines on digital media. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has released the following guidelines for OTT platforms and digital news media:

Digital news media and OTT platforms must register with the Ministry and comply with the rules and regulations.

Digital news media and OTT platforms are required to appoint a chief editor and a grievance officer.

Digital news media and OTT platforms must ensure that the content they publish or transmit complies with Indian laws.

OTT platforms and digital news organisations must set up a system for accepting and handling customer complaints.
