Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me gives a greater peak into Selena’s personal life and six years of her career. It was on August 17, 2022, when Selena’s fans who call themselves ‘Selenators’ stumbled upon a database that revealed that the 30-year-old singer is working on a documentary. The fans also created it as a trending topic on Twitter which said “SELENA DOCUMENTARY IS COMING”. However, the official news was announced by Selena herself through an Instagram post on September 8, 2022.
Directed by Alek Keshishian Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me is a documentary that focuses on Selena’s six-year period her career. The film is currently streaming on AppleTV+.
My Mind and Me takes you through the deep visuals into Selena’s mind. From her struggles with depression, and bipolar disorder, to lupus the documentary is a visual diary of Selena’s mind and her search for purpose and self-love. It was back in the early 2000s-2010s when her love anthem ‘Who Says’ was released and during one of her concerts, the entire crowd started singing the lyrics “Who says you’re not perfect, who says you’re not worth it?” for Selena and took over her performance and we could see her overwhelmed with their reactions. The song is tied to that era and has always been evergreen.
Through this new documentary, Selena answered this question and said it’s her. A raw and deeply unfiltered honest exposition of Selena, the biggest star in the world, and her mental health struggles, this documentary shows it all. Although it's very different from the narrative of being famous. She is seen repeatedly acknowledging her fame and her platform and the pressure of importance that has been given to her. One of the opening scenes shows Selena breaking down into tears after her performance rehearsals during the Revival tour. She feels upset and not good enough. Her anxiety feels shocking at first but then tends to become relatable.
Selena Gomez is layered, complex, and unafraid to face her darkest fears on screen. The documentary includes fast montages of her performing at massive venues, of her fans who are tearing down with emotions as she clicks pictures with them, and of her facial makeup being done where she gives blank expression. It shows glimpses of her being depressed in her bed, in the car, with a cousin, while she takes a walk in her neighbourhood and interludes excerpts from her diary.
This documentary gives us a transparent look at Selena’s life beyond her on-screen position. With the extreme detailings of her up and down journey, this documentary is a must-watch for viewers.
