Ryan Gosling in line to win the Kirk Douglas Award at SBIFF

The 16th Annual Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film will be given to Ryan Gosling by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. This is the second time the honor has been given since Kirk Douglas passed away. The Ritz-Carlton Bacara in Santa Barbara, California will host the award presentation on January 1.

In front of the camera, Ryan Gosling has always been a powerful combination of drama and humor. Executive director Roger Durling stated in a statement that "this year, thanks to his widely praised, triumphant performance as Ken in 'Barbie' - a film that truly demanded the attention of critics and moviegoers around the world - he has become a true cinematic powerhouse."

Along with four Golden Globe nominations and one win for "La La Land," Gosling has received two Oscar nods for "Half Nelson" and "La La Land." In addition, he has received multiple BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild nominations, a National Board of Review Award, and a Film Independent Spirit Award. For his role in La La Land, Gosling was already honored with the 2017 SBIFF Outstanding Performer of the Year award. He'll next be seen in David Leitch's "The Fall Guy," costarring with Emily Blunt.

Since 2006, lifetime achievement in film has been recognized by the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film, which is given to individuals who work in front of, behind, or both of the camera. Past recipients include Forest Whitaker, Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Harrison Ford, Quentin Tarantino, Ed Harris, John Travolta, Michelle Yeoh, Hugh Jackman, Dame Judi Dench, Warren Beatty, Jane Fonda, Jessica Lange, and Forest Whitaker.

From February 7–17, the 39th Santa Barbara International Film Festival will be held. In January, the film schedule and lineup will be revealed.
