On the Auspicious Day of Chhatrapati Shivaji Jayanti, Actor Riteish Deshmukh announced his next project "Raja Shivaji," a film on the life of Maratha warrior-king Chhatrapati Shivaji.

The 45 year old Actor will direct and will also play the titular role of Maharashtra’s greatest warrior in “Raja Shivaji.” The bilingual, Hindi-Marathi, historical drama film was announced through a concept poster and is scheduled for release in 2025.

"Raja Shivaji'' will portray the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's life and journey from a young rebel to the revered Raja Shivaji, with Deshmukh both directing and portraying the iconic historical figure.

According to the official synopsis, the film will depict Shivaji's rise after the downfall of the Adilshahi Sultanate of Bijapur. "Raja Shivaji" will narrate an epic journey of Shivaji and the exploits of the courageous rebel who "challenged the unbeatable and won over hearts, igniting the flames of Swarajya."

On X, Riteish Deshmukh shared a poster of the film and wrote, “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not just a name but an emotion. On the auspicious occasion of his birth anniversary, I join you in paying homage to the great son of the soil. May his legacy continue to inspire us for generations to come. On Instagram, Riteish in the caption of the poster of the film, he wrote, “In the annals of history, there emerges a figure who transcends mere mortal existence—a legend, an icon, an eternal flame of inspiration. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not a mere historical figure; he is an emotion, a timeless saga of valour, and a beacon of hope that has illuminated hearts for over three and a half centuries. Our deepest aspiration has always been to immortalise his awe-inspiring journey on the grand canvas of cinema—a journey of epic proportions, depicting the rise of a boy who defied the invincible, sparking the flames of Swarajya. A rebel whose courage knew no bounds, he didn’t just rule land, he conquered hearts, earning the endearing title of ‘Raja Shivaji’.

Riteish Deshmukh made his directorial debut with the Marathi film "Ved." "Raja Shivaji" will be his second directorial project, a dream project for both him and his actor wife Genelia, who is also a producer on the project. Genelia expressed that bringing the life story of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to the screen has been their "biggest dream."

"Raja Shivaji" is co-produced by Jyoti Deshpande and Genelia Deshmukh, under the banners of Jio Studios and Deshmukh’s home production banner Mumbai Film Company.

The film also signifies the Marathi cinema debut of National Award-winning cinematographer Santosh Sivan, adding further prestige to the project. The musical score will be composed by the talented duo Ajay-Atul.

According to the makers, the filming of Raja Shivaji will begin this year. Renowned cinematographer Santosh Sivan expressed, "Shivaji is more than just a film; it represents a culmination of passion, dedication, and years of meticulous research and scripting by Ritesh Deshmukh. Having been invited years ago to document this journey, witnessing its realisation is a testament to the power of vision and perseverance in the world of cinema."

Another two films based on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj are in line, one starring Akshay Kumar with director Mahesh Manjrekar, and the other being made by Sandeep Singh.
