Review of The Marvels: A Mixed Superhero Film with Hope

In 2019, Martin Scorsese made headlines by stating that Marvel movies aren't cinema, sparking a heated debate among fans and industry professionals. Since then, some believe that Scorsese's words may have had a subtle curse on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), leading to a string of lacklustre films.

One of the latest additions to the MCU is "The Marvels," which follows three superheroines: Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Ms. Marvel. Despite its relatively short runtime of 105 minutes, the film fails to deliver a compelling story. The central antagonist, Dar-Benn, falls into the archetype of lacklustre villains that have plagued many MCU films. With ambiguous motivations and a forgettable character profile, she fails to leave a lasting impression.

"The Marvels" attempts to play with time, with the heroes swapping places in a chaotic manner. This adds an element of fun, reminiscent of a superhero version of "Freaky Friday." Director Nia DaCosta brings charm to the movie through the character Kamala Khan, a fangirl who meets her idols. However, the rest of the film feels stuck in second gear, lacking the epic battles and formidable adversaries that once defined the MCU.

The film tries to elicit laughter with the inclusion of Goose, the Flerkin cat, and a scene involving cute kittens. However, these attempts at humour feel forced, overshadowing the emotional investment in the story. The best part of the film is actually at the very end, during the credits, which tease what's coming next. Unfortunately, this only serves as a reminder of the mediocrity that permeates the majority of the film.

It's evident that since "Avengers: Endgame" concluded, the MCU has been having trouble establishing itself. Scorsese's criticism of the franchise is ongoing. The days of epic confrontations against strong foes such as Thanos seem like a long time ago. The Marvel Cinematic Universe requires a reorganisation and a return to the grandiose cinematic style that first brought it fame.

While Scorsese's comment may still be in the back of Kevin Feige's mind, it's time for the MCU to break free from its limitations and bring back the magic that once captivated audiences. A fresh start is needed to reignite the superhero movie genre and restore the franchise to its former glory.
