Ranveer Singh Faces FWICE Ban After Explosive Don 3 Exit Row

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has landed in the middle of one of the industry’s biggest controversies of the year after the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) issued a non-cooperation directive against him over his abrupt exit from Don 3. The dispute, which has been brewing for months between Singh and filmmaker Farhan Akhtar, has now snowballed into a larger debate around professionalism, contractual accountability, financial losses, and the power of film bodies in Bollywood.

The action against Ranveer Singh was announced by FWICE during a press conference held in Mumbai on Monday. According to the federation, the decision came after repeated attempts to hear the actor’s side allegedly went unanswered.

How the Don 3 Dispute Began

The controversy traces back to April 11, when Farhan Akhtar formally approached FWICE with a complaint against Ranveer Singh. According to FWICE Chief Advisor Ashoke Pandit, the complaint alleged that the actor exited Don 3 barely three weeks before the production unit was scheduled to leave for shooting, causing major disruption to the film’s schedule and finances.

Don 3 had been one of Bollywood’s most anticipated projects ever since Ranveer Singh was announced in 2023 as the new face of the iconic franchise previously headlined by Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. The announcement teaser generated massive excitement online, with fans eager to see Ranveer step into the role of Don. However, after the initial buzz, the film gradually went quiet, and reports of creative disagreements between the actor and the makers began surfacing.

Industry reports claimed Ranveer was unhappy with aspects of the script and the film’s development process. Some reports also suggested the actor felt the screenplay was not fully locked before production planning had begun. While none of these claims were officially confirmed by either side initially, the silence around the project fuelled speculation that the actor had walked away from the film.

FWICE Says Ranveer Ignored Multiple Notices

At the heart of FWICE’s decision is its claim that Ranveer Singh failed to cooperate with the federation’s mediation efforts. Ashoke Pandit stated that FWICE followed “natural justice” and invited both parties to present their sides before arriving at any conclusion.

According to the federation, producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani attended the meeting and presented their version of events in detail. While Sidhwani appeared in person, Farhan reportedly joined virtually from London. The meeting allegedly lasted nearly two hours, during which the producers explained the sequence of events and the financial impact caused by Ranveer’s exit.

FWICE claims it subsequently sent three formal notices to Ranveer Singh over a period of weeks, requesting him to appear before the body and explain his position. However, according to the federation, the actor did not respond to these notices.

Pandit further revealed that Ranveer’s team finally sent an email only after FWICE announced plans for a press conference. In that communication, the actor’s representatives reportedly questioned FWICE’s jurisdiction over the matter and argued that the federation had no authority to intervene in what they described as a contractual dispute.

The Rs 45 Crore Damage Claim

One of the biggest talking points in the controversy has been the alleged financial loss suffered by the producers. Reports suggest Farhan Akhtar’s primary grievance revolves around approximately Rs 45 crore already invested in the project before Ranveer’s exit.

According to sources, the expenditure included pre-production work, scheduling, planning, and other logistical preparations for Don 3. The producers reportedly claimed that the investments had been fully audited and documented, and they were prepared to present records if required.

Earlier reports had suggested the amount under dispute was closer to Rs 40 crore, though later coverage consistently mentioned Rs 45 crore as the figure Farhan Akhtar was seeking in damages.

The production house had also reportedly denied rumours that a financial settlement had already been reached between the parties, indicating that negotiations remained unresolved.

FWICE Defends Its Decision

FWICE President BN Tiwari defended the non-cooperation directive by saying the issue was not merely about a disagreement between an actor and a producer but about the livelihoods of thousands of workers associated with film productions.

“When a film is made, thousands of workers get employment. When a film suddenly stops, junior artists and daily wage workers also suffer financial losses,” Tiwari said during the press conference.

He also stressed that no star, regardless of stature, is above industry rules and regulations. FWICE subsequently appealed to all affiliated bodies and workers not to collaborate with Ranveer Singh until the dispute is resolved.

Ashoke Pandit, meanwhile, described the matter as part of a worrying trend in Bollywood where actors walk out of projects at advanced stages of development, placing producers and workers in difficult situations. “We will not allow the industry to be doomed,” Pandit reportedly said while discussing the issue.

FWICE, which represents over 400,000 workers across different crafts in the Indian entertainment industry, said the decision was taken after internal deliberations and was intended to send a strong message about professional accountability.

Ranveer Singh Finally Responds

Hours after the directive was announced, Ranveer Singh broke his silence through an official statement issued by his spokesperson. However, the actor avoided directly addressing either the allegations or the non-cooperation order itself.

Instead, the statement took a diplomatic tone, suggesting that “professional discussions and personal equations are best handled with dignity, maturity and mutual respect.”

The statement further noted that “narratives surfaced over time,” hinting at the growing public speculation around the matter, but stopped short of explaining why the actor exited the project in the first place.

Importantly, Ranveer did not directly comment on FWICE’s authority or the federation’s allegations during his public response, keeping his remarks broad and measured. Sources close to the actor have reportedly maintained that the issue is fundamentally contractual in nature and should be resolved legally rather than through public pressure.

Industry Reactions and Social Media Debate

The controversy has triggered intense debate across the film industry and social media platforms. While some industry insiders believe actors should honour commitments once production preparations begin, others argue that performers have the right to walk away from projects if creative or professional concerns remain unresolved.

Online discussions have also questioned the legal standing of FWICE’s directive, with several users pointing out that the federation is not a court of law. Others, however, defended the body’s intervention, arguing that abrupt exits from big-budget productions can severely affect workers dependent on film shoots for daily income.

The timing of the controversy has also drawn attention because it comes after the success of Ranveer Singh’s recent film, which reportedly revived the actor’s box-office standing. Some online commentators speculated that the dispute escalated further after the actor regained commercial momentum.

What Happens Next?

As things stand, Don 3 remains stalled, and there is no official clarity on whether the film will proceed with a new lead actor or whether reconciliation remains possible. Reports suggest all parties may still be open to discussions aimed at reviving the project and preventing further losses.

For now, however, the dispute has become much bigger than a single film. It has exposed deeper tensions within Bollywood over contracts, creative disagreements, production accountability, and the influence wielded by industry bodies such as FWICE.

Whether the matter eventually ends in court, mediation, or reconciliation, the Ranveer Singh-Don 3 fallout has already become one of the most closely watched entertainment industry controversies of 2026.
