Oscars 2025: Shabana Azmi, SS Rajamouli, Ritesh Sidhwani and other Indians invited to join the Academy

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently announced that it has invited 487 new members, including renowned Indian celebrities like - Shabana Azmi, SS Rajamouli, Rama Rajamouli, Ritesh Sidhwani and others to join the Class of 2024. The Academy declared the new members on its website, citing their professional background and dedication to equity, inclusiveness, and representation as the reasons behind their selection. Upon accepting membership, those who have been invited to several branches will have to choose one. 

The Academy, includes 71 Oscar nominees, including 19 winners. 

The Indian artists who were invited to join The Academy

  • Shabana Azmi, a five-time National Award winner has been invited to join the Actors branch.

  • SS Rajamouli, the director of RRR created history by winning the Best Original Song for its track Naatu Naatu at the Oscars 2023.

  • Rima Das, who has directed films like "Village Rockstars," "Bulbul Can Sing," and "Tora's Husband," has won praise from critics all around the world. "Village Rockstars" was India's official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. 
  • Filmmakers Sheetal Sharma, and Anand Kumar Tucker, as well as documentary filmmakers Nisha Pahuja and Hemal Trivedi, will be joining the Directors branch.
  • Rama Rajamouli will also be joining the Costume branch of the Academy.  
  • Ritesh Sidhwani, co-founder of Excel Entertainment, has secured a spot among film professionals invited to join the prestigious Academy. His inclusion comes in recognition of his work as a producer on films like Gully Boy and Dil Chahta Hai.

  • Choreographer Prem Rakshith (who choreographed Naatu Naatu) and Cinematographer Ravi Varman are among the other notable Indians on the list. 

According to a press release from The Academy, the Class of 2024 includes 44% women, 41% members of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, and representatives from 56 non-US nations and territories.

The Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang expressed their delight by stating, "We are thrilled to welcome this year's class of new members to the Academy. These remarkably talented artists and professionals from around the world have made a significant impact on our filmmaking community."
