South superstar Nayanthara and her director husband Vignesh Sivan who recently got married in June this year have become proud parents of twin boys Uyir and Ulagam. They welcomed their children via surrogacy announcing it to the world on 9th October, just 4 months out from their official wedding date. While some congratulated the beautiful couple on becoming newly-minted parents, an obvious controversy came knocking too.
It didn't take long for the power couple to come under investigation by the Tamil Nadu Health department since the state believed they had broken the surrogacy laws. Commercial surrogacy is not allowed in India, and to qualify, a surrogate must have at least one previous marriage and an offspring of her own. According to the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) act and the Surrogacy (Regulation) act enacted in 2021, the couple is deemed eligible for surrogacy only if they have been married for five years.
The woman must be aged between 25 and 50 years of age, and the husband between 26 and 55. They must not have any child, biological or adopted. According to the law, the surrogate mother has to be a close relative of the couple, a married woman with a child of her own, aged between 25 and 35 years, who has been a surrogate only once in her life.
Only altruistic surrogacy would be permitted in which the couple who hires the surrogate would pay for the medical expenses and the insurance coverage of the surrogate - no other charges or expenses would be covered by the couple.
Now after the rumour mills have run overtime, Nayanthara and Vignesh have submitted an affidavit claiming they got their marriage registered six years ago. They have also claimed that the surrogate is Nayanthara's relative from the UAE.
After dating each other for a few years, Nayanthara and Vignesh finally tied the knot on June 9 in a resort in Mahabalipuram.
