Leilani McConney, a former Miss Barbados, claims that the 2000 Miss World competition was rigged. Priyanka Chopra topped that year's competition and went on to forge a prosperous professional life in India and the US. Leilani participated in the competition as Miss Barbados 2000. When Leilani learned about similar accusations being made regarding the Miss USA 2022 contest, she recalled what once happened to her.
Recent Miss USA candidates claimed that Miss Texas R'Bonney Gabriel, the eventual winner, and the program's sponsor had a conflict of interest. The very same sponsor, according to contestants, supported Miss Texas from the sides and was also engaged with that pageant. More questions were raised when the winner's pictures appeared on digital platforms the following day but appeared to have been taken weeks beforehand in preparation for her victory.
“I literally went through the same thing at Miss World. Me, I went through that,” in a video uploaded to her YouTube page, Leilani remarked. She described instances of what she believed to be partiality for Priyanka in the same video, calling the actress 'not nice' and 'unlikeable' as a human. McConney, in contrast to Priyanka, seems to just be a YouTuber and maintains a podcast.
Leilani added, “So, I was Miss Barbados and I went to Miss World, and the year I went, Miss India won. Mind you, Miss India had won the previous year. The sponsor was also Zee TV, an Indian cable station. They sponsored the entire Miss World. Our sashes had Zee TV, and then our country.”
Leilani remembered that everyone at the gathering noted that there was a trend of partiality towards Priyanka because she was permitted to pose in a one-piece swimwear and sarong while no one else was. The only female who was given permission to keep her sarong on, according to her, was Priyanka Chopra. She must have been using a lotion to balance out her skin tone, but it was still uneven. "It was simply a skin tone lotion; I'm not suggesting it was a bleaching product. She did not want to take off her sarong because it was ineffective. She is therefore actually dressed for the judgment. If you’re a contestant in a pageant and somebody favours you, what will you do about it? Why wouldn’t you go along with it?” she questioned.
Leilani gave further instances, stating that Priyanka Chopra didn't even attend rehearsals or breakfast. It was delivered to her in bed. She attended all of her press briefings alone; no one else did. No one else in Asia, no one else, was ever contacted for these press conferences. She had these photos of herself strolling along the beach taken during the competition before she qualified. Everyone was gathered within that sand pit at the moment. All of their gowns were created by the same designer that created hers. Their dresses were essentially little bridesmaid versions of hers. In addition, the dresses fit miserably. Her dress was flawless.
Leilani claimed that the remaining competitors left the stage after Priyanka was declared the winner because they felt it was unjust.
After winning Miss World in 2000, Priyanka began acting in Indian cinema and quickly rose to fame becoming one of the most well-known actors. She currently resides in Los Angeles with US singer Nick Jonas and their baby Malti Marie.
