Madhubala’s Biopic: 'Darlings’ Director Jasmeet K Reen to direct the Biographical Drama

Biopics are all a little more common in Bollywood these days, and now all eyes are on the much-awaited biopic on Bollywood's Anarkali and legendary actor Madhubala.

After months of speculations, the big reveal is here! The life and legacy of the iconic Madhubala, known as 'the living Taj Mahal' and 'India's Marilyn Monroe', is set to grace the silver screen once again.

Sony Pictures International Productions, has made an announcement of its dreamy plans to portray the enchanting journey of Madhubala on the Silver screen and highlight the struggles of and as a woman in the glamorous world of entertainment industry during her era.

Taking to social media platforms, Sony Pictures International Productions announced the project. The caption read, “ Exciting News! We’re thrilled to announce our upcoming film honoring the legendary Madhubala, the epitome of grace and talent. Get ready to delve into the timeless charm and captivating story of one of Bollywood’s most iconic stars. Stay tuned for updates! #MadhubalaFilm #BollywoodLegend #ComingSoon,”

And leading this ambitious project is none other than the filmmaker Jasmeet K. Reen, the director of Alia Bhatt starrer 'Darlings'. Reen, who made her directorial debut with Alia Bhatt-starrer "Darlings", also posted about the project on Instagram. "An exciting new journey with some wonderful people begins, grateful," she wrote.

Adding that personal touch, Madhubala's sister, Madhur Brij Bhushan, along with Arvind Kumar Malviya under the banner Madhubala Ventures, takes on the role of the co-producers. The producers Sony Pictures International Productions and Brewing Thoughts Pvt. Ltd. announced their collaboration on this new venture. The actress potraying her is yet to be announced.

Earlier, Fashion designer Manish Malhotra's rumoured project on Madhubala, featuring the talented Kriti Sanon, was the talk of the town, but Madhubala's sister herself put all speculations to rest. 

Madhubala’s sister, Madhur Brij Bhushan, clarified in a previous statement that only one biopic is supported by her, aiming to avoid hurting anyone’s feelings. The biopic intends to reveal unknown aspects of Madhubala's life and correct misconceptions, with the filmmakers given creative freedom to portray her truthfully.

Hindi cinema's golden era witnessed the beauty of Madhubala, as she starred in approximately 60 films and was considered one of the highest-earning actresses of her time. Madhubala was celebrated for her notable performances in movies such as "Mr. & Mrs. 55" (1955), "Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi" (1958), "Kala Pani" (1958), and "Howrah Bridge" (1958).

Madhubala (Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi) was born in14 February 1933. Her first major role, at the age of 16, was as the leading lady in the 1949 film ‘Mahal’ opposite Ashok Kumar. Her career defining role was as Anarkali in the 1960 historical epic drama "Mughal-e-Azam", which featured Dilip Kumar and Prithviraj Kapoor.  After two decades of illustrious career, she died in 1969 at the age of 36.
