Kohli faces strong reactions for flying in private jet, netizens criticize

The former captain of the Indian cricket team and one of the wealthiest cricketers currently playing in the world, Virat Kohli, has found himself in the spotlight on social media after posting images of himself flying on a private jet from the West Indies to India.

In an Instagram post, Kohli thanked pilot Abu Patel and global aircraft charter company Air Charter Service for organizing the trip.

He was criticized for flying privately by a number of people, who also brought up the potential environmental effects. A user commented, "What happened to all the gyan on Diwali pollution?"  Another said, “Climate change has left the chat"

The criticism was sparked by Kohli's involvement with the "Go Green" campaign of his Indian Premier League (IPL) side, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Since 2011, RCB has participated in one home game per season while dressed in green jerseys to promote a "greener and sustainable" planet.

Some of Kohli's supporters criticized the usage of private jets, which are famous for leaving a huge carbon footprint, given his support for environmental causes and his focus on celebrating a pollution-free Diwali. According to reports, a single private jet may produce two tons of carbon dioxide in just one hour, which makes them far more polluting than commercial aircraft per passenger.

In light of the frequent media attention given to environmental and climate change issues, some claimed Kohli needs to serve as a better example and take seriously the environmental effects of using private aircraft.
