Karan Johar, who had over two million followers on Twitter, has officially bid goodbye to the platform. In his last tweet, he mentioned the reason as well - “Making space for more positive energies only this is a step one towards that, goodbye Twitter!!” Perhaps the negativity and slander, the trademark style of Twitterati's language, was not going down anymore with the Big Daddy of Bollywood.
Social media can be a beneficial communication tool for celebrities to connect with their fans, helping them reach out to them with their thoughts, pictures, opinions, their average work day and the nitty-gritty of their personal lives. Everyone today is using their social handles to reach out to the larger masses in lesser time and also to make direct contact with their audiences. But then, overexposure is a double-edged sword and it just doesn't come with the likes and retweets alone.
Celebrities the world over are facing negativity and trolls, often-times trampling over their private spaces and many times, impacting their mental health. At such a juncture, a break from the noise is maybe just what they need and KJo seems to be pioneering that trend in India. The filmmaker has been a victim of the trolls for a while now and this decision has had a lot of his fans rallying behind him, with comments supporting his decision.
While Karan might have taken the lead in India with such a decision, many international celebrities like Cardi B, Kelly Marie, Lizzo, Millie Bobby Brown have done this to protect their sanity and stay relevant in the right spaces - their own craft - rather than the treacherous zones of social media fandom.
Well, we hope he sticks to it, playing out the example for his actual followers for a longer time to come.
