The highly anticipated film Kalki 2898 AD, directed by Nag Ashwin and starring Prabhas, has made a thunderous entry at the box office. On its opening day, the film shattered records, becoming the highest-grossing opener of the year and the third-biggest opener in Indian cinema history, surpassing Yash-starrer KGF Chapter 2.
Record-Breaking Collections
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Kalki 2898 AD garnered an impressive Rs 95 crore net in India on its first day. The gross collection in India is estimated at Rs 115 crore. Combined with an overseas collection estimated at Rs 65 crore, the total opening day earnings of the film reached a staggering Rs 180 crore.
Regional Performance
The film, released in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam, saw the maximum earnings from its Telugu version. Out of the Rs 95 crore net collection in India, Rs 64.5 crore came from the Telugu version alone. This was followed by Rs 24 crore from the Hindi version, Rs 4 crore from the Tamil version, Rs 2.2 crore from the Malayalam version, and Rs 30 lakh from the Kannada version. The overall occupancy rate for the Telugu version was an impressive 85.15 percent.
Comparisons with Other Blockbusters
The futuristic spectacle Kalki 2898 AD outperformed last year's biggest hit Jawan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, which made Rs 75 crore on its opening day. Jawan eventually amassed Rs 1,160 crore worldwide, with Rs 640.25 crore net from India.
Kalki 2898 AD's opening also surpassed the gross collection of KGF Chapter 2, which made Rs 159 crore on its first day. However, KGF 2's net collection record of Rs 116 crore on its opening day remains unbroken, as Kalki 2898 AD reached Rs 95 crore net.
Top Indian Openers
The top two spots for the biggest Indian openers are held by SS Rajamouli’s films RRR and Baahubali 2. RRR which won an Oscar, made Rs 223 crore on its opening day, while Baahubali 2, which also starred Prabhas, made Rs 217 crore. In terms of net collections, RRR amassed Rs 133 crore on its first day, followed by Baahubali 2 with Rs 121 crore.
Future Prospects
With such a phenomenal start, Kalki 2898 AD is poised for a robust weekend ahead. Initial predictions suggested the film might achieve Rs 500 crore during its first weekend. Whether it will continue to draw audiences and meet these expectations remains to be seen.
