Recently, a tweet by a developer confirmed that he is now the creative director of a new, original IP for a AAA multiplatform game at Netflix. The developer in question is Joe Staten, who previously worked on Halo games for Bungie and served as senior creative director for Microsoft. While details on the project are scarce, Staten's involvement is a significant win for Netflix's growing games division.
Netflix Games, which launched in November 2021, currently has around 55 games available to subscribers at no additional cost, with nearly 100 more in development. The company has also purchased several studios and is developing a cloud service to bring its games to other platforms. However, it is unclear how Staten's project will fit into Netflix's broader gaming strategy.
Staten's departure from Microsoft comes after he helped ship Halo Infinite, which has had a rocky post-launch period and saw significant staff losses at 343 Industries. Staten's move to Netflix could signal a fresh start for him and an opportunity for the streaming giant to make a splash in the gaming industry.
