The Bollywood industry came under the spotlight on Monday, September 28, after the Income Tax Department launched search operations at multiple locations in Mumbai linked to actor Rakul Preet Singh, veteran producer Vashu Bhagnani and production house Panorama Studios.

The searches are reportedly part of an ongoing investigation into suspected financial irregularities connected with film financing, production and overseas transactions. Officials are examining documents, financial records and details of transactions that allegedly involved substantial sums being remitted outside India under the guise of expenses related to film projects.

Around 12 locations are understood to have come under the department's scrutiny. A separate search operation was also reported at filmmaker Ali Abbas Zafar's office, adding another prominent name from the Hindi film industry to the developing investigation.

At this stage, the searches remain part of an investigation. No final findings establishing tax evasion or any other financial offence have been publicly announced.

Why Is the Income Tax Department Conducting Searches?

The investigation is reportedly centred on the movement of money connected with film-related activities.

Information available so far indicates that authorities are looking into substantial amounts allegedly sent abroad while being described as expenses for activities such as film shoots, foreign distribution and production. Investigators are examining whether the transactions were genuine business expenses or whether they concealed financial irregularities or resulted in tax liabilities being avoided.

Such transactions can involve multiple parties, companies, production entities and overseas vendors, making it necessary for investigators to examine financial records in detail. The current searches are therefore understood to be aimed at gathering documents and other material that could help authorities establish how the transactions were structured and where the money ultimately went.

The precise amount of money involved has not been officially disclosed.

The investigation is also still underway, meaning the documents being examined could potentially lead authorities to additional transactions or entities. At present, however, it would be premature to draw conclusions about any individual's involvement or liability.

Rakul Preet Singh's Connection to the Investigation

Rakul Preet Singh is among the prominent names linked to the searches. The actor, who has worked extensively across Hindi, Telugu and Tamil cinema, is married to actor-producer Jackky Bhagnani.

Her connection to the investigation appears to have brought considerable attention to the operation because of her association with the Bhagnani family, which has a long-standing presence in the Hindi film industry.

However, being linked to a search does not by itself establish wrongdoing. The Income Tax Department's searches are intended to examine financial records and gather evidence as part of the investigation.

There has also been a separate law-enforcement matter involving Rakul Preet Singh's brother, Aman Preet Singh, reported in December 2025. That case concerned an alleged drug-related investigation. The earlier matter is separate from the present Income Tax investigation and should not be treated as connected without evidence establishing such a link.

Vashu Bhagnani and the Film Production Connection

Veteran producer Vashu Bhagnani is another key name associated with Monday's Income Tax searches.

Bhagnani has been involved in Hindi cinema for decades and has backed several commercially prominent films. His production activities have included projects spanning different genres and generations of Bollywood.

The current investigation brings particular attention to the financial side of film production, where large sums can move between production houses, distributors, artists, technicians, overseas vendors and other entities.

According to reports, investigators are examining transactions linked to film production and foreign activities to determine whether the funds were used for the purposes for which they were declared and whether the associated tax obligations were properly met.

No official conclusion has been announced against Bhagnani in connection with the searches.

Panorama Studios Also Under the Scanner

Panorama Studios is another major entity linked to the Income Tax operation.

The production and distribution company has been associated with several notable Hindi films and is headed by filmmaker-producer Kumar Mangat Pathak along with Abhishek Pathak.

The company has worked across production, distribution and other areas of the film business, making its financial transactions relevant to an investigation examining film-related fund movements.

The searches reportedly include premises associated with the company, with officials examining financial documents and records as part of their inquiry.

The timing has also drawn attention because Panorama Studios is preparing for the theatrical release of Drishyam: The Conclusion, scheduled to arrive in cinemas on October 2.

Ali Abbas Zafar's Office Also Searched

Filmmaker Ali Abbas Zafar's name has also emerged in connection with the Income Tax operation.

A search was reportedly underway at his office in Mumbai on Monday. Zafar has directed and produced several major Hindi film projects and has previously collaborated with Vashu Bhagnani's production setup.

Reports have indicated that the broader investigation is examining film-related overseas payments, including transactions associated with shooting, production and distribution outside India.

The exact nature of the connection between Zafar's office and the wider investigation has not been publicly detailed. Authorities have also not announced any final finding against him.

What Happens Next?

The Income Tax Department's search operation is only one stage of a potentially longer process.

During such investigations, officials can examine documents, financial records and transaction details to determine whether reported income, expenses and payments correspond with the underlying financial activity. Investigators may also trace transactions across different entities and jurisdictions where required.

The material gathered during the searches could subsequently be analysed to determine whether there were discrepancies or violations of tax regulations.

If investigators identify financial discrepancies, the department could take further action under applicable tax laws. However, the existence of a search operation should not be interpreted as proof that tax evasion has occurred.

As of September 28, the investigation remains ongoing, and further details are expected only after authorities analyse the records collected during the operation.

Rakul Preet Singh, Jackky Bhagnani and Vashu Bhagnani had not publicly responded to the search reports at the time of publication.

The absence of a response does not establish or imply wrongdoing, particularly while the investigation is still underway.
