For audiences who grew up watching Bollywood comedies in the early and mid-2000s, Rajpal Yadav was synonymous with laughter. From Hulchul and Bhagam Bhag to Phir Hera Pheri, Chup Chup Ke, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa, his screen presence guaranteed comic relief. Yet, in February 2026, the same actor found himself behind bars in Delhi’s Tihar Jail—not for any criminal misconduct tied to violence or fraud, but due to a prolonged financial dispute that escalated into a cheque-bounce case worth nearly ₹9 crore.
Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail on February 5, 2026, after the Delhi High Court rejected his final plea seeking more time to arrange funds. The court directed him to serve a six-month sentence, bringing to an end a legal battle that began in 2010 with the failure of his directorial venture Ata Pata Laapata.
What initially started as a business setback slowly snowballed into a decade-and-a-half-long courtroom struggle, marked by bounced cheques, missed deadlines, repeated assurances, partial repayments, and ultimately, judicial impatience.
How the Legal Trouble Began in 2010
According to reports by PTI, Rajpal Yadav’s financial troubles trace back to 2010, when he borrowed approximately ₹5 crore from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd. The loan was taken to finance his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata, a film that failed to perform at the box office.
The commercial failure left the actor struggling to repay the borrowed amount. As repayments were delayed, interest and penalties accumulated over the years, eventually pushing the total outstanding dues to nearly ₹9 crore.
To clear the liability, Yadav issued multiple cheques to the lender. However, these cheques were dishonoured, prompting the company to initiate criminal proceedings under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, which deals with cheque-bounce offences.
Conviction, Appeals, and Years of Extensions
In April 2018, a magisterial court convicted Rajpal Yadav and his wife in several cheque-bounce cases, sentencing him to six months’ imprisonment. The verdict was upheld by a sessions court in 2019, following which Yadav moved the Delhi High Court, seeking relief.
Over the years, the High Court granted him multiple extensions, allowing the actor to repay the amount in instalments. During this period, Yadav made partial payments and repeatedly assured the court that he would adhere to agreed schedules.
However, the court later noted that these commitments were consistently breached.
In its observations, the High Court stated that Yadav was required to pay ₹1.35 crore in each of the seven cases filed against him. It also ordered that the amount already deposited with the Registrar General be released to the complainant company.
Rajpal Yadav is a gifted actor who has given years of unforgettable work to our industry. Sometimes life turns unfair, not because of talent, but because timing can be brutal. He will be part of my film, and I believe this is the moment for all of us..producers, directors,…— sonu sood (@SonuSood) February 10, 2026
Partial Payments but No Resolution
In October 2025, Rajpal Yadav deposited two demand drafts of ₹75 lakh, but the court recorded that a substantial amount—close to ₹9 crore—was still pending.
Earlier, in June 2024, the High Court had temporarily suspended his conviction, on the condition that he take “sincere and genuine measures” to explore an amicable settlement. When these efforts failed to yield concrete results, the court revisited the suspension.
Judicial records noted a growing concern over what was described as a “lack of seriousness” in resolving the matter, despite years of leniency.
The Final Order: No More Leniency
On February 2, 2026, the Delhi High Court directed Rajpal Yadav to surrender before jail authorities by 4 pm on February 4. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma observed that the actor’s repeated breaches of undertakings deserved to be deprecated.
When Yadav failed to surrender by the stipulated time, his senior counsel made a last-minute “mercy plea”, stating that the actor had been attempting to arrange funds and had only reached Delhi at 5 pm.
The court firmly rejected the request.
“This Court cannot be expected to show or create special circumstances for any person merely because such a person belongs to a particular background or industry,” Justice Sharma remarked.
She further stated that leniency cannot be extended endlessly, especially when met with continued non-compliance, adding that recalling the surrender order would send the wrong message that court directives could be ignored without consequence.
It breaks my heart to see a senior, immensely talented artist like Rajpal Yadav ji going through such a painful phase. He has given us countless smiles, laughter, and unforgettable moments. Today, he needs us.

February 5, 2026: Surrender at Tihar Jail
On February 5, Rajpal Yadav appeared in person before the High Court. His counsel informed the bench that the actor was prepared to submit a fresh demand draft of ₹25 lakh and follow a new payment schedule.
Despite the offer, the court declined to recall its order, emphasising that compassion must be balanced with discipline.
Later that day, Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail, where jail authorities confirmed that standard admission procedures were followed and that previously deposited funds had already been transferred to the complainant.
“I Have No Other Way”: Rajpal Yadav Speaks
In interviews given before his surrender, Rajpal Yadav expressed emotional distress over his situation.
Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, he said:
“What to do? I don’t have the money to pay back. I can’t see another way out.”
In another emotional statement reported by News X, he broke down while addressing the crisis:
“Sir, kya karoon? Mere paas paise nahin hain. Aur koi upaay nahin dikhta… Sir, yahan hum sab akele hain. There are no friends. I have to deal with this crisis on my own.”

When asked whether colleagues from the industry had stepped in to help, Yadav replied bluntly:
“Everyone is on their own.”
Bollywood and Political Support Pours In
Following his surrender, several prominent figures from the film industry publicly extended support to Rajpal Yadav.
- Sonu Sood Offers Work and Financial Support
Actor Sonu Sood announced that Yadav would be part of his upcoming film and that he would receive a signing amount, adjustable against future work.
In a post on X, Sood wrote:
“Rajpal Yadav is a gifted actor who has given years of unforgettable work to our industry. Sometimes life turns unfair, not because of talent, but because timing can be brutal.”
He added:
“A small signing amount, adjustable against future work, is not charity—it’s dignity. When one of our own is going through a tough phase, the industry must remind him he’s not alone.”
- Anees Bazmee Speaks Out
Filmmaker Anees Bazmee, who has known Yadav for over two decades, told NDTV:
“He never had any intention of wronging anyone. Very few people in the film industry are fully proficient in paperwork. He is still working and earning gradually, but paying such a large amount at once is not easy for him.”
- Gurmeet Choudhary’s Emotional Appeal
Actor Gurmeet Choudhary also expressed concern, writing:
“It breaks my heart to see a senior, immensely talented artist like Rajpal Yadav ji going through such a painful phase.”
He urged the fraternity to come together, adding:
“Our industry is a family. And family does not abandon its own.”
- Tej Pratap Yadav's ₹11 Lakh Assistance Announced
Politician Tej Pratap Yadav, national president of the Jan Shakti Janata Dal, announced financial assistance of ₹11 lakh to Rajpal Yadav’s family.
In a post on X, he stated:
“In this extremely difficult time, I and my entire JJD family stand in complete empathy and solidarity with their grieving family.”
Professional Front: What Lies Ahead
Despite the legal setback, Rajpal Yadav remains professionally active. He was last seen in Baby John and Interrogation and is set to appear next in Akshay Kumar’s horror-comedy Bhoot Bangla, scheduled for release on April 10.
A Cautionary Tale Beyond Stardom
The Delhi High Court made it clear that professional background or celebrity status cannot override legal accountability. While the industry has rallied around Rajpal Yadav with offers of work and financial aid, the court’s ruling underscores a firm message: compliance with the law cannot be optional, regardless of fame.
Rajpal Yadav’s case has sparked wider conversations about financial vulnerability within the film industry, the fine line between civil disputes and criminal liability, and the consequences of prolonged non-compliance with court orders.
For an actor who once made millions laugh, the episode stands as a sobering reminder that success on screen does not always translate into stability off it—and that timing, as Sonu Sood noted, can sometimes be brutally unforgiving.
