The Election Commission has announced its decision to designate actor Rajkummar Rao as the national icon, ahead of assembly elections in five states. A formal ceremony to mark this designation will take place on Thursday, as stated by the election authority.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar will appoint actor Rajkumar Rao as the National Icon of the EC on Thursday, October 26. His role will be to inspire and encourage voters to actively participate in the upcoming assembly elections in five states. These elections will see over 161 million eligible people exercising their right to vote.
When are the elections in five states?
It is known that assembly elections will be held in Madhya Pradesh on 17th November, Rajasthan on 25th November, Telangana on 30th November, Mizoram on 7th November and Chhattisgarh assembly elections will be held in two phases on 7th November and 17th November. The results of all these will be released on 3rd December.
Last year, the EC honoured the renowned actor Pankaj Tripathi as the National Icon. In the past, during the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, esteemed personalities such as M.S. Dhoni, Aamir Khan, and Mary Kom had also been recognized as ECI National Icons.

Rao had portrayed the role of a principled government clerk in the movie Hindi film "Newton" in 2017. His character was committed to ensuring a fair election in a region of Chhattisgarh affected by Maoists, even though he faced doubt and indifference from a security officer. His outstanding acting was praised, and the film received the National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. It was also India's pick for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 90th Academy Awards.
