Prior to this, deepfake technology had fooled actresses Rashmika Mandanna, Kajol, and Katrina Kaif. These actresses' faces were altered to resemble different people using deepfake technology. Across the country, actors, union ministers, and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi have responded to this.
With the use of deepfake technology, anyone can create phony portraits of themselves and manipulate them into saying or acting in ways they never would in real life. As technology has advanced, it is now increasingly challenging to determine whether a video is real or not.
The government recently declared that in order to combat the threat posed by deepfakes, it will either create new legislation or modify current ones. Four pillars will support this draft: identifying deepfakes, stopping deepfakes, creating a grievance and reporting system, and increasing awareness.
Deepfakes are one of the main risks to the country's system, according to PM Modi. Recently, he emphasized that deepfakes could destabilize society and asked the public and media to exercise caution.
