Ananya Panday in Control: A Timely AI Cautionary Tale
Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, CTRL tells the growing anxieties related to cybercrime and artificial intelligence in today's driven world of social media. But at the heart of the film is Nella Awasthi (played by Ananya Panday), who is a social media influencer whose glamorous online life starts unraveling when she decides to digitally delete her partner Joe Mascarehnas (Vihaan Samat) from her existence by using an AI app. What starts out innocently enough snowballs into a series of great, albeit unexpected consequences, makes CTRL both a riveting drama and a cautionary tale on the dangers of unchecked technology.
A Glimpse into the Lives of Social Media Influencers
Above all, the movie vividly captures how people-mostly Gen-Z-have begun to monetize their lives online. Nella and Joe find themselves in a world that does not believe in privacy any more, because the art of perfecting the narrative is important than reality. Motwane remembers his influencer culture as being authentic, revealing the emotional fallouts when those online personas begin to blur the lines of what is considered reality.
Ananya Panday's Breakthrough Performance
Known more for her shallow, carefree characters, Ananya Panday delivers the same this time but brings on a different level of emotional depth to Nella in CTRL. What starts off light, almost naive, develops when Nella experiences the weight of her consequences. Her performances throughout the movie reveal not only her growth as an actress, but also in how she can give depth to a character that may otherwise appear one-dimensional.

The Film's Central Theme
Technology quickly gets out of hand if mishandled. As Nella turns to the AI for help in her effort to delete Joe from her existence, the app does more than just erase memories; it also usurps her identity. The movie sets up tension well as Nella struggles through control of her digital identity, a story that resonates especially well today, with its themes of constant surveillance and data breach.
Is There a Way Out of the Digital Maze?
The movie raises compelling questions about how deeply entangled we have become in our digital identities in the later stages of the tale when Nella's online world collapses. Can we ever really disconnect from the networks that eat into our personal data and memories? There is more than a hint that Motwane doesn't provide an answer for us, leaving the viewers with an eerie sense of discomfort at the film's close.
A well-crafted thriller that is somewhat low-stakes
While some of the commentary on digital privacy and AI truly hits a high note, thriller elements of the movie don't ascend nearly to the same level. When Nella's story gets to that climax, the tension fades fast, making the ending less potent than the setup. The film feels much like a question in conversation rather than a thriller that is high-octane.

Final Thoughts
CTRL is one of the satirical reflections of the digital age, and how dangerous this has proven to be for this generation of youth who more or less live life on social media. Amid a film that wasn't as thrilling as it had promise, Ananya Panday shines bright for having taken on issues of privacy, tech, and fragile online relationships.
