Heartbreak High is an Australian Teen Drama Television series produced by NewBe and Freemantle Australia, created by Hannah Carroll Chapman, that was released on 14th September 2022 on Netflix.
The show stars the students of a fictional school named Hartley High in Australia, as they navigate through a routine of high school romance, racial tension and a variety of neo-adherent ideals that makes the Aussie drama stand out in the crowd.
The series opens up explosively when a map delineating the real and rumoured sexual exploits of Hartley High's students was discovered graphitized on the abandoned stairwell wall of the school. The students whose names were on it were then forced to attend a new sexual education course called the Sexual Literacy Tutorial (SLT). As the culprit is identified as Amerie Wadia, the students who were forced to attend SLTs get angry at Amerie and Ostracize her for her deeds. As one watches on, it slowly unravels to be a rollercoaster of emotions, too much so for the references to autism.
Since its release on the OTT platform, the show has reached the top 10 in Australia and has also garnered global attention reaching over 46.3 million views in the first three weeks, receiving critical acclamation from around the globe for its neorealistic representation of sexuality, racial, neurodivergent stance, as well as it’s modern and realistic ventures into defining modern teendom.
The series breaks down the boundaries of race, sex and neurovariance in a modern take, addressing serious issues like youth crime, substance abuse and discrimination based on race and gender while maintaining the balance of comical and cliché moments to mildly suppress the seriousness of the issues.
The new ideals of sexuality and Gender Identity may be cringe to many, while many queer and neurovariance aficionado’s among the masses cheer on, for finally coming across a series that caters to their tastes. There has been a very positive response from American audiences, as Young Americans embrace and familiarize themselves with the Australian Trends and culture portrayed in the show, with the topic “Heartbreak High” reaching over 300 million views on Tiktok.
The show is a reboot of the Original Series “Heartbreak High” that was broadcasted in Australia between 1994-1996 on Network Ten as well as on ABC Australia between 1997-1999 and had significant patronage from the audience of UK.
The reboot starred many new talents including actors like Chika Ikogwe, James Majoos, Gemma Chua-Tran, Josh Heuston, Asher Yasbincek, Brodie Townsend, Will McDonald, Sherry-Lee Watson, Bryn Chapman-Parish, Thomas Weatherall and Ayesha Madon. The superb performance displayed by the cast has left many online awestruck and craving for more.
Following the phenomenal success of the show, the directors declared that there would be a second season. The cast has been reported to have gathered in Sydney, Australia for Filming and Pre-production of the next part of the series.
