Tragic Murder of Music Icon
In December 1980, John Lennon was tragically killed in the archway of the Dakota, his New York City residence. Mark David Chapman, who travelled from Hawaii to New York on 8 December to murder Lennon, used a 38 special revolver to fire five hollow-point bullets. Earlier that day he spotted the Beatles star and asked him to sign a copy of Double Fantasy, the new album by Lennon and Ono. As a result, he received a prison sentence ranging from 20 years to life.
During his parole hearings, Chapman admitted to feeling conflicted about committing the murder on the day. “It wasn’t all totally cold-blooded, but most of it was. I did try to tell myself to leave. I’ve got the album, take it home, show my wife, everything will be fine,” Chapman said in 2012.
In 2022, Chapman was denied parole for the 12th time. It has been reported that Ono, who was with Lennon on the day of his death at a photoshoot for Rolling Stone magazine, frequently requests for Chapman to remain in prison. Chapman is entitled to another parole review in 2024.
Since John Lennon's tragic murder in 1980, his family and friends have been determined to prevent Mark David Chapman from achieving the notoriety he desired. This led to the creation of "Chapter 27," a fictionalised portrayal of the hours leading up to the murder, featuring Jared Leto as Chapman, who underwent a significant physical transformation for the role. The film also included Lindsay Lohan and Judah Friedlander. Unfortunately, "Chapter 27" received poor reviews and faced delays before its limited release in 2008.
