Actor Vijay Thalapathy Launches TVK Party: Top Insights from his First Maanadu

Vijay Thalapahty made his political debut at the press conference held at Villurupam.

C. Joseph Vijay Thalapathy, dressed in a pure white shirt and beige pants, arrived at Vikravandi town this Sunday, flocked by his security to address the crowd of 3 lakh people. Vijay Thalapahty debuted his political career by launching TVK, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, and held his first maanaadu (public conference) in Villurupam, Tamil Nadu. He unveiled his bold political visions of prioritizing equality, and social justice intending to eradicate casteism.

Vijay Thalapathy announced that his party TVK would follow Tamil icon ‘Periyar’ ideologies while making an exception for his atheistic beliefs. Along with considered social reformists and constitutional framers such as Baba Saheb Ambedkar and Kamraj to be his guiding lights throughout the political expedition. 

When addressing the party’s ideologies, Vilay Thalapathy pointed out that his party would not shrink itself to one particular ideology and slammed the DMK and BJP indirectly for ‘cheating minorities by following the Dravidian model’. 

 Establishing himself as an alternative to the state’s shady politics, Thalapathy highlighted his objective to stand firm against the ‘corrupt family politics’ and draw a distinctive line between his ideologies and regressive agendas of state politics, such as ‘divisive casteist and dividing agendas.’

  • A call for Social reform and Secularism

The beloved star pointed out that his party’s main priority would be to fight against the eradication of social evils, promote quality, accessible education and healthcare, and ensure social justice for every segment of society. 

While empowering the women's population and maintaining a stance of secularism. Maintaining that there should be censorship in casteism and proportional representation would be the key to securing equal representation.

Vijay also addressed the notion of the ‘Kothaadi (drama artist) slur being a common occurrence, dismissing the actors-politicians and their stances, “I am not the only one to be  Koothadi." He gave the examples of actor-politician M G Ramachandran and N T Rama Rao of Andhra Pradesh.

Even though Vijay Thalapathy opposed other parties for promoting misinterpreted Dravidian ideology for their benefit, ‘cheating minorities by following the Dravidian model’.He didn't distance the TVK party from the following ‘Dravidian ideology’, firmly affirming his party would bridge the gap between traditional ‘Dravidian ideology’ and broader national issues.

The 50-year-old star-turned-politician had a remarkable career in cinema, with over 70 films. It was surprising for everyone when he announced his political party. Addressing the crowd, Vijay states, “I’ve thrown away my career at its peak; I have thrown away my remuneration... I am here as your Vijay; let us walk with faith and hope.”

At last, Vijay called out those who gathered with an ulterior motive to show up on social media or chase clout. “This is not a gathering for social media. This is a mass gathering not for cash but for a good cause,” he passionately said, adding, “And there’s no looking back now.”
