Girls Will Be Girls, the debut production venture of Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal, is set to premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Directed by Shuchi Talati, the film will be screened under the World Dramatic Feature category and is one of the 16 films chosen to participate in the competition section of the festival.
The film is set in a boarding school in a small Himalayan hill town in northern India and follows the journey of Mira, a 16-year-old girl whose rebellious awakening is intertwined with her mother's unfulfilled coming-of-age experiences. Talati expressed her delight at having her first feature selected at Sundance, calling it the Mecca of cinema. She also mentioned that the film's story, which revolves around a love story between a mother and daughter, resonates with people across continents.
Chadha and Fazal launched their production banner, Pushing Buttons Studios, with the vision of telling unique stories. Chadha expressed her excitement at the film making it to Sundance, stating that it validates their commitment to compelling storytelling. The cast of the movie includes actors Kani Kusruti, Jitin Gulati, Preeti Panigrahi, and Kesav Binoy Kiron in lead roles.
Fazal, known for his roles in international films such as "Victoria & Abdul" and "Kandahar," described being a part of Sundance with their first production as a dream realized. He emphasised that "Girls Will Be Girls" is not just a film but a celebration of storytelling.
Pushing Buttons Studios, Blink Digital, Crawling Angel Films, and Dolce Vita Films collaborated to produce the official Indo-French co-production. In addition to acknowledging the commitment and enthusiasm of the entire crew working on the project, the filmmakers expressed their hope that the movie will make a lasting impression on viewers' emotions.
