Vygr Maharashtra: Vertical university campus in Thane and Mumbai to support cities' land reality

Mumbai, a very small piece of land but with lakhs of people. Mumbai is the financial capital of the country, but there is not much space in the city. Land has always been a problem of the city, which restricts the big infrastructure projects many times. To support the lack of land in the city, the state cabinet has approved the Vertical University Campus in Mumbai and Thane on July 19.

The idea behind VUC is to save land and build a vertical campus rather than the traditional vast campus which needs huge amounts of land. But authorities in the Higher and Technical Education Department said that, "universities need to have a build up area of at least 15,000 sq. ft."

While building a vertical university campus, concerned authorities have to follow a few guidelines, which are as follows:

  • No commercial activity can be held in the building.
  • There has to be a future perspective to the construction if it needs to be increased in upcoming years.
  • Construction of classrooms will happen under the supervision and with suggestions of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
  • As per the Unified Development Control and Promotion regulations and Development Control Promotion Regulations, 40% of land needs to be reserved for playgrounds.

Institutions which secured NAAC 3.25 grade points and are in the top 200 ranks of the National Board of Accreditation or National Institution Ranking Framework are only allowed to build vertical university campuses.

According to government policy, there is mention of a minimum land percentage to establish universities in different areas, like in rural areas, a minimum of 25 acres of land is necessary to establish a university, in district headquarters, the amount is 15 acres and in regional headquarters, it's 10 acres. But in metropolitan cities like Mumbai, it's really difficult to get 10 acres of land and, therefore, this initiative has been taken which will definitely help to change the quality and future of education in India.
