12 autonomous colleges affiliated with Mumbai University received an 'empowered' tag. This means now these 12 colleges can offer joint degrees. On June 30th, Mumbai University Management Council approved the application for an empowered tag to 12 colleges out of 13.
Xavier's, Mithibai, Ruia, SIES, Somaiya, Sophia are some well-known colleges in Mumbai which are on the list of 12 colleges. Empowered title will differentiate these 12 colleges from a total of 59 autonomous colleges affiliated to MU.
- What is the benefit of this empowered status?
1) College will offer joint degrees. That means a student can learn two subjects at a time. There are two separate curriculums combined into a single degree. So there is no need to opt for two different degree courses.
2) Colleges can come up with new certificate courses, diplomas, undergraduate courses, master's and PHD programs.
3) They can decide their own fee structure. (University approval necessary)
4) Colleges will be able to renew their existing courses under the UGC (University Grants Commission) guidelines.
5) There will be the name and logo of both college as well as the university on the degree which students will receive.
Ravindra Kulkarni, MU vice chancellor said, "these colleges of excellence will enjoy this 'empowered' status for the next 10 academic years, starting from 2023-24."
Remaining colleges on the list are Bhavans college Andheri, Birla college Kalyan, Khandwala college Malad, Karmveer Bhaurao Patil college Navi Mumbai, Jhunjhunwala college Ghatkopar, Jai Hind college Churchgate.
This initiative will act like a glamour to institutions and definitely help students to explore various fields.
