The University Grants Commission (UGC), the Indian higher education regulatory authority responsible for maintaining higher education standards in India, has recently warned about the presence of fake universities in the country. The UGC has released a list of 20 fraudulent educational institutions operating in different states, with the highest concentration in Delhi (8 universities).
The list of fake universities includes universities from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. The main purpose of this list is to raise awareness among students and parents about their existence and to assist in identifying these fake universities.

UGC has provided explicit directions to the relevant states urging them to take action against these fake universities. The Commission has also written to the State Government's Department of Higher Education and Principal, Secretaries urging them to take appropriate action against these illegitimate establishments so as to prevent them from cheating students and ruining the quality of education in the country. The aim is to provide students with access to legitimate and credible educational institutions that respect the established norms of quality and trustworthiness.
