Smriti Irani launches Education Program for Sikh community: Fostering skill development, leadership & entrepreneurship

On the auspicious occasion of the Sikh New Year, Union Minister of the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Smt. Smriti Irani, today launched a comprehensive education program aimed at promoting entrepreneurship, skill development, and leadership for the Sikh community, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi,  The Pradhan Mantri Virasat Ka Samvardhan (PM VIKAS) Scheme of the Ministry has approved this program in the larger spirit of "Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas." It is administered by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), a Statutory Body created for the welfare of the Sikh community.

With 10,000 youth and women as its target audience, this program aims to educate school dropouts and promote Sikh artisans like Sikligars and other groups engaged in traditional arts and crafts, as well as modern skill training for employment-oriented job roles. Approximately Rs 100 crores would be spent on the initiative in total.

Through this Ministry initiative, beneficiaries from other socially disadvantaged communities will also be served, fostering social and communal harmony while also helping the socioeconomically disadvantaged groups in the community carve out a place for themselves in the narrative of the country's prosperity. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Minority Affairs and societies/educational institutions nominated or registered under the DSGMC will formalize this transformative partnership.

The DSGMC currently operates four colleges within Delhi University: Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa College, Mata Sundri College of Women, and Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce. Additionally, there are twelve branches of Guru Harkishan Public Schools, one ITI, and four colleges within Delhi University. These establishments have a track record of success in providing education and developing skills for the benefit of Sikhs and other communities.

Through the development and nurturing of these educational and skill-building institutions, the Ministry of Minority Affairs hopes to support and aid the Sikh community in creating employment and livelihood opportunities, not only in Delhi but throughout India.

The government is also aware of the need of protecting and advancing the Sikh community's rich cultural legacy and customs, which include the Gurmukhi script. The decision has been made to establish state-of-the-art Gurmukhi Script learning centers in Khalsa colleges affiliated with the University of Delhi. These centers will offer basic language instruction and facilitate the creation of an IT platform that will disseminate Sikh heritage and knowledge to students.

The Gurumukhi Script shall be preserved and propagated by the Centers as well. Under PM Jan Vikas Karyakram's direction, the Ministry will assist in supplying the necessary infrastructure and auxiliary services, such as the creation of Studios and Smart Classrooms. The Government's commitment to empowering and uplifting the marginalized sections of the Sikh community across the country is demonstrated by the approval of these initiatives for the Sikh community under the PM VIKAS and PMJVK scheme. This milestone also envisions a real socio-economic transformation for the families involved.
