SC Hearing: Cancellation of Grace Marks Awarded to 1,563 Students

June 13: The Supreme Court heard three petitions today involving the cancellation and possible re-examination of the NEET-UG 2024 due to accusations of a paper leak and irregularities in the awarding of grace marks. The petitions were heard by a Vacation Bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah. Shivangi Mishra and nine others filed the first petition on June 1, before the announcement of the results. Alakh Pandey, the CEO of EdTech startup Physics Wallah', has filed one of them, alleging that the National Testing Agency (NTA) awarded grace marks to over 1,500 candidates at random.

NSUI Members demand re-examination for all the applicants

NSUI members and doctors have staged a protest for the re-conduct of the NEET-UG 2024 examination. They demanded a re-test for all applicants to ensure that the examination process is fair and impartial and that all students have an equal opportunity to demonstrate their ability. They also condemn the NTA's probe into the matter and request that the Central Bureau of Investigation should intervene and conduct a thorough investigation.

Cancellation of grace marks credited to 1,563 candidates:

On June 13, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that it decided to invalidate the scorecards of 1563 NEET-UG 2024 candidates who received grace marks. They will be given the option of retaking the examination. Students who are not willing to take the re-examination will have their results based on the May 5 exam (without grace marks).  Not every candidate can seek a re-examination; only those who appeared at centres where time was limited for some reason are eligible.

The Re-examination Dates:

The re-test examination will take place on June 23, with results announced on June 30. According to the Centre, admission counselling for MBBS, BDS, and other courses will begin on July 6.

The Press Information Bureau's fact-check on OMR sheets

Numerous NEET candidates claimed that there were substantial discrepancies between their original OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) sheets and the final results issued by the National Testing Agency. These candidates turned to social media to expose instances in which their manually calculated OMR sheet scores did not match the NTA's publicly published scores. Ayushi Patel, a NEET 2024 candidate from Lucknow, gained recognition on the matter after posting a video about her experience on the social media platform X. In her quest for justice, she even received support from Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. However, these statements have been discredited by the PIB Fact-Checking Team. They also asserted that no damaged OMR sheets were sent from the NTA's official email address.
