NEET-UG 2024: SC hears plea seeking CBI probe amid student protests

The Supreme Court granted notice on petitions seeking a CBI inquiry into alleged instances of paper leaks and malpractices during the NEET-UG 2024 test. The Vacation Bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta grouped the cases with other petitions presenting the same issues, which were scheduled for July 8. While the National Testing Agency was required to respond within two weeks, other respondents (the Centre) were granted time until the next hearing date.

The Petitioners' Appeal

The appeal stated that the Gujarat police had filed a complaint after an instructor offered to solve the NEET exam for Rs.10 lakhs. Similarly, a FIR has been filed in Patna, Bihar, along with a statement given before the Magistrate Court in Patna, stating the availability of strong evidence supporting the NEET paper leak.

The NSUI Protests

Following the alleged NEET exam paper leak, students have expressed concerns and sought a re-examination and an extensive inquiry by the CBI. NSUI members and doctors staged a protest for the re-conduct of the NEET-UG 2024 examination. On June 14, some NSUI candidates demand to meet the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan at his Delhi residence. Later, on Saturday (June 15) an FIR was filed on these student leaders for the protests the staged outside the Union Health Minister's house.

The Kolkata Protest

Members of the All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO) protested in front of Kolkata's Bikash Bhavan over the NEET-UG results. Bearing placards in their hands and slogans in their voices, the protestors insisted on marching forward. According to the demonstrators, the controversy over NEET-UG has jeopardised the futures of many aspiring doctors.

The police originally attempted to calm the protestors and remove them from the scene. However, because they were determined to move forward, police captured several of them and drove them away in vehicles. The TMC expressed solidarity with the students on the subject of NEET-UG and sought a Supreme Court-monitored investigation.

The Rajasthan Protests

There was also a scuffle between the police and the protestors in Rajasthan's Kota, after which the police used a lathi charge to drive them away. Rajasthan NSUI President Vinod Jakhar stated that lakhs of children's hopes of becoming doctors are being crushed. In Ajmer, too, ABVP activists asked for the cancellation of the NEET UG exam and a CBI investigation into the alleged discrepancies.
