The Ministry of Education has instructed all states and union territories to establish a six-year-old minimum age for Class 1 admission.
The new National Education Policy (NEP) defines the foundational stage as five years of education for all children (ages 3 to 8), which includes three years of preschool and then Classes 1 and 2.
The minimum age for a child to enter the first standard in India is currently 6 years old. This is to the guidelines set by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which is one of the largest education boards in India. The policy was first introduced in 2010 and has been implemented in many schools across the country.
The policy aims to ensure that children have reached an appropriate level of cognitive and social development before they begin formal schooling. The policy also recognizes the importance of early childhood education and encourages parents and caregivers to provide a stimulating and nurturing environment for young children in the years before they start school.
