IIT Indore selected among 100 labs in India for 5G testing

Indian Institute of Technology Indore has been selected as one of the 100 5G labs to be established in the country by the Government of India's Department of Telecommunications. This exciting news was revealed on Friday during the inauguration of the 7th edition of India Mobile Congress, which was graced by the presence of our esteemed Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, at Bharat Mandapam.

Professor Suhas Joshi, the director of IIT Indore, expressed his pride in the institute's entrusted responsibility. He emphasized that 5G technology is designed to establish connections among virtually everything, encompassing machines, objects, and devices. Key factors for this technology include enhancing the quality of service (QoS) in terms of data rates and reliability, which will offer users a distinct and improved experience in terms of connectivity. The technology will efficiently link a vast array of embedded sensors, thus providing highly efficient and cost-effective connectivity solutions.

The labs are being built to help students and startups learn about and develop 5G technologies. This will allow them to create and test 5G applications in a variety of socioeconomic verticals

The government has agreed to fund 80% of the capital expenditure required to set up the lab, while the institute will need to contribute the remaining 20%. However, the government will fully fund the operational expenditure for the next four years.

As part of the agreement, the institute will be responsible for training a minimum of 50 students and 10 faculty members in the 5G lab. This will ensure that there is a skilled workforce ready to take on the challenges of this advanced technology. IIT Indore is committed to focusing on advanced quantum research and contributing to local development. The institute aims to showcase its research innovation on a global scale. To meet the needs of the lab, the 5G lab equipment will include essential components such as 5G SA infrastructure (mid-band), 5G SIMs, Dongles, IoT Gateway, Router, and Application Server. Additionally, a management dashboard will be provided to ensure efficient operation and monitoring. The institute will provide all necessary facilities, including space, power supply, internet and intranet connectivity, and other equipment. They will also have a dedicated tech-manpower team for local maintenance, ensuring the smooth functioning of the lab.
