On November 30, the Walmart Foundation announced that it had awarded the Transform Rural India Foundation (TRIF) a grant of $1.2 million, or around ₹10 crore, with the aim of helping 15,000 women rural farmers in Uttar Pradesh improve their standard of living by raising their average base income.
According to REPORTS, the cash will be used as part of a two-year project to build ten women-led, self-sustaining farmer-producer organizations (FPOs). According to a statement from the organization, the money would also help to give women farmers a platform to improve and diversify their means of subsistence.
Julie Gehrki, vice president and COO of the Walmart Foundation, provided some details about the project, saying, "This project strongly resonates with our commitment to reach 1 million farmers by 2028 with at least 50% women." With the support of this investment, we will be able to reach more rural women and strengthen our influence by encouraging sustainable growth and opening up new revenue streams.
The foundation stated that as part of the project, the FPOs will get assistance in creating business plans, post-harvest infrastructure, and necessary systems and processes like digital bookkeeping and management control systems.
The foundation added that the grant would support women farmers in training and capacity-building programs and aid in the adoption of climate-resilient practices such as improving soil health, using organic mixtures to protect and nourish crops, and managing water, among other things.
"It will establish 'Krishi Value Hub' to undertake processing activities for identified buyers through white-label goods, which other companies can sell as their brands, and for the deployment of an enterprise resource planning system," TRIF Managing Director Anish Kumar stated. Aside from raising poultry, fisheries, and goats, the interventions will encompass value chains such as those for legumes, cereals, and horticultural products.
We are appreciative of the Walmart Foundation and hopeful about constructing these lighthouses because this money will aid in the development and demonstration of the institutional model for marginalized and female farmers.
According to the foundation, the program would use self-help groups that are supported by the government-run Deendayal Antodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM) to assist 15,000 women in productive roles inside the FPOs.
