The Hindujas, Britain's billionaire family, is claimed to have taken advantage of domestic workers at their Lake Geneva villa, seizing their passports and paying them $8 for fifteen to eighteen hours of labour.
According to Swiss prosecutor Yves Bertossa, who is pushing for jail terms of up to five and a half years during a trial over allegations of trafficking and abuse of Indian employees, the billionaire family spent more money on their beloved dog than they did on one of their servants. The four Hinduja family members - Prakash Hinduja, his wife Kamal, their son Ajay and his wife Namrata, are the subject of a trial that started in Switzerland on Monday.
Details of the trial
- The prosecution stated that employees' contracts required them to be available to their employers as and when needed, not laying down specific working hours or days off.
- He continued by saying that they had little to no freedom because their passports had been seized, they were paid in India, they had no Swiss francs to spend, and they were not allowed to leave the house without permission from their boss.
- The Hindujas' attorney has refuted these claims, saying that the family had no say in the recruiting or day-to-day management of the employees.
- The Hinduja family further charged that the prosecutor had misrepresented the workers' salary since, according to their attorney, paychecks do not fully reflect the wages of employees because they also receive board and lodging.
With an estimated net worth of $20 billion, the Hinduja family is one of the richest in India. They are the owners of the Hinduja Group, a multinational conglomerate with holdings in media, banking, shipping, and other industries in addition to London real estate.
