Lufthansa airlines suffer a worldwide Tech outage, then get back up

German airline giant Lufthansa said Wednesday its operations were resuming hours after it was forced to cancel or delay flights over a major IT outage caused by construction work in Frankfurt.

The company said the issue has affected the brand’s entire group of airlines, which, in addition to the namesake German carrier, includes Austrian, Belgian, and Swiss flag carriers—Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Swiss—and budget carrier Eurowings.

Over 4000 flights were delayed before the FAA ground stop was lifted. Lufthansa said on social media that the airlines of the Lufthansa Group were affected by an IT outage and the issue had been caused by damage to fiber-optic cables during construction work in Frankfurt. The disruption was expected to continue until the early evening, however, Lufthansa soon stabilized its flight operations at Frankfurt airport.

It's not uncommon for airlines to experience tech outages from time to time, and most have contingency plans in place to minimize disruptions and get their systems back up and running as quickly as possible.

Once the tech outage has been resolved and services are restored, Lufthansa would need to take steps to ensure that their systems are fully operational and that there are no lingering issues that could cause further disruptions. This may involve conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the outage and making any necessary changes or upgrades to prevent similar incidents in the future.
